What is a server-address code? How LinkACode works

LinkACode turns a server address into a short code. Learn what the code contains, what it leaves out and what someone still needs to sign in.

A server address can be awkward to type or pass on. LinkACode turns a server address into a short code, such as AB123456. The code is a shorter way to refer to an address you already have the right to use. It does not contain media, a username or a password, and it does not grant access by itself.

What the code represents

A LinkACode code stands for a server host and an optional port. It is not a full web link and cannot include a path. Someone can type the code or scan its QR card where a compatible app asks for a server address.

In Vizi Player, a LinkACode ID can stand in for the server address used with an Xtream Codes login. The person entering it still signs in with the username and password for that server. A code does not replace those details or make a sign-in on their behalf.

A shorter address, not a new permission

LinkACode is for a server you run or are authorised to use. For example, someone can use one code when setting up the devices in their own home to connect to their own media server. Each person still needs the server's own sign-in details.

One code works for as many people, on as many devices, as you like. The address stays private in Vizi: the app keeps the code rather than showing the address on screen, saving it with the playlist or putting it in an error message. LinkACode stores addresses encrypted with AES-256.

Those limits matter. A code is a shortcut to an address, not a source of content or a way around the server's normal sign-in. LinkACode has a reporting address for misuse, and a code can be switched off after a credible report.

Changing or switching off a code

You can change the address a code points to during its first 24 hours. After that, it is fixed. You can switch a code off or back on, but Vizi looks it up when a playlist is added and when it is refreshed. Because the answer is kept on the device between refreshes, switching off a code takes effect at the next refresh rather than instantly.

LinkACode is a separate service that Vizi supports. OMWSD LTD runs both. Read the LinkACode project page for how the service was built, or visit LinkACode for its details. For the app side, see Vizi Player.
